The PBP format is most often associated with files that contain firmware for Sony Playstation Portable (PSP) consoles. Such file contains the firmware of this device or its update. It is a type of software that is permanently installed on the device, ensuring its proper operation.

Sometimes PBP files were also used to install other PSP applications (e.g. games or modding tools). Files of this format were usually named BBOOT.PBP. Today it is rarely used and is considered obsolete.
