PMA file format was introduced by Microsoft along with its Windows 7 operating systems and is still supported by Windows 10. PMA files store data collected by Windows Performance Monitor, a system performance monitoring and analysis tool.

Windows Performance Monitor is accessed from START menu by issuing command "perform" in the search field. A Microsoft Management Console plugin will launch that offers several analytical modules that measure performance of various system components.
