SF2 is an audio sample format. Such digital audio material contains all information, including information about instruments, that can be used to play the sound via MIDI. SF2 files store a group of audio sample definitions with a bit resolution of 16 or 24. These are called banks of sounds. Such sound samples can be re-synthesized using various parameters.

The SF2 format is supported by Awave Studio. Today, however, it is rarely used and is considered obsolete.
