SPE file contains plugin tool used by IBM SPSS data analysis software. SPE files offer additional software functionalities related to automation of large database workflow.

Extensions in SPE files allow for implementation of programming languages (such as R, for example), statistical data visualization, and social network analitics. Some of the available plugins are developed by IBM, and others by dedicated user community. Many SPSS plugin source code pacakges are available on GitHub platform.
