Files with the .SVG extension contain information regarding two-dimensional vector graphics, encoded in an open text format based on the XML character language. The format was devised by the WWW Consortium, also called W3C, and is used for viewing vector graphics online. During the devising of the SVG format, the company Adobe had a lot to say – their Adobe Creative Suite programs namely allow for the creation and exporting of graphics into SVG.
The programs that support the format are Adobe Illustrator and GoLive, whereas Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and InDesign do not natively support graphics contained in SVG files – they require plug-ins developed by Scand to be able to import the files into their projects.
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a graphics file based on XML, which supports 2D vector images. SVG is an open standard maintained by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). SVG files can be used to store vector images in text format.
Using text format to define images has many advantages. SVG images are fully scalable – changing image size doesn’t affect its quality. XML standard offers also ability to search, index, script, or compress images. SVG files can opened, viewed, and created using any standard text editor or image editing software. SVG files are also smaller in size than JPG or PNG files.
SVG format was developed first and foremost as vector graphics format for internet-related applications. It was designed to support other web standards such as CSS, DOM, and SMIL. Graphics content shared over the internet uses SVG format as it enables editing, a feature very helpful if files are reused in other projects. Most web browsers supports SVG format rendering.
