The .DOCX file type refers to Microsoft word’s most recent file type. Beginning with the 2007 version of Word, Microsoft’s proprietary software for word processing, the word files are now saved with the .DOCX extension instead of the old .doc. This is in line with Microsoft’s approach to be compliant with the open XML standards.
The Docx files are very versatile and allow for a variety of formatting and other operations to be done on the Microsoft word files. The earlier DOC version used to store data in a single binary whereas the current DOCX version stores the data using the XML standards.
