The .GPX extension files are the GPS exchange files which are used for exchange of GPS data for the software applications. The file stores the geographical data in a variety of different formats and includes features like routes, waypoints and tracks.
The file structure is based on XML formatting as it is an extension of XML and has the ability to export and import map data. Mostly the data is exchanged along with the files in the form of web services and APIs. The GPS is an open framework and thus allows more acceptability and popularity among the developers.

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is a GPS data format used by various navigation applications. GPX files store information regarding locations’s longitude and latitude, including those of waypoint, routes, or tracks.
Three types of data in GPX files:
- Waypoint – GPS locations coordinates with optional information.
- Route – an orderd list of points (track points which represent waypoints that lead to given destination).
- Track – ordered list of points decribing a path.
Universality of GPX format
GPX format facilitates GPS data exchange between various applications, devices, or users. Such data is typically exchanged as files via service API. GPX format is platform independent and open-source. GPX file structure is based on XML format, which allows for easy data access and exchange betwwen different application and services. Location data, date, elevation, and other information in GPX files are store in XML.
A short history
First GPX format specification was relased in 2002. Two years later, second version, designated as GPX 1.1, was released that implemented XMLstandard for GPS data sharing.
