Files with the .JPEG extension contain lossy compressed images recorded in a standardized format created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group – JPEG for short - as well as metadata of this image, such as space and color profile, as well as image dimensions. The color scale of the image can be up to 24-bit. Loss compression means deterioration of image quality in the case of multiple compressions.
The JPEG format is popular for storing net-located graphics or photos. The .JPEG extension is the same as .JPG, however the shorter name is more common. Opening JPEG files is possible in many different programs on different platforms, also directly by dragging the file into a web browser. There are also a large number of free and professional JPEG editing programs that also support the export of JPEG files into other formats.
