NKM is an extension of files characteristic for a professional software sound sampler used by music producers called Kontakt. NKM files are used to store samples containing sounds from multiple instruments. They can be subjected to advanced sampling techniques.

Contact is a tool from Native Instruments with a huge library of sounds sorted into over 1000 instruments. In many respects it is a better solution than a hardware sampler.
