Files with the .PAGES extension contain documents created in a text editor and can encompass text content, images, tables, charts, and diagrams. It is compressed in ZIP form, which distinguishes between the individual elements of the document, including a preview of the first page in JPG format, as well as an optional PDF with a preview of the entire document.
PAGES files are created by the Pages software, part of the Apple iWork office suite, which also contains Numbers, a program for handling spreadsheets, as well as Keynote, made for presentations.

Main file (named index.xml) stores data in XML format and contains information related to actual text and formatting. PAGES archive also contains a JPG file, which is used for displaying preview of document’s first page. PAGES also holds an additional PDF file used for previewing the whole document. The PDF file preserves formatting and fonts of the original documents and can be used to view or print the document.

PAGES files can easily be converted into other formats.
