PGM is raster graphics grayscale file. PGM files use two types of encoding, 8-bit and 16-bit, and can be saved in either binary or ASCII text format.
PGM files consists of grid of numbers from 0 to 65 536 that represent different shades of gray. PGM file header defines the type of image representation (text or binary) and image dimensions. PGM files can be converted into other image formats using a dedicated tool, for example multiplatform application Netpbm.
