TGA is a raster graphics format developed in 1984. The format is sometimes refered to as TARGA, short for Truevision Advanced Raster Graphic Adapter.
Simple architecture and multiplatform support are the reasons why TGA format is still popular among game developers, who use this format for texture data and screenshots. TAR files are small in size, mainly die to unsophisticated file construction, despite lack of any compression option. TAR version 2.0, introduced in 1989, added support for thumbnails and metadata.
