File with a .WSP extension contains a package compressed in CAB format, along with different resources and source files used by the SharePoint system as add-ons – non-typical components. It may be, for instance, a web site added to the Sharepoint company’s web site. Creation of packages is possible within Visual Studio extensions, software for Windows SharePoint Services.

SharePoint software is used to manage documents and other content on level of a company. WSP files are added to the database of Sharepoint configuration with the stsadm -o addsolution file_name.WSP command, and they can be implemented on a server with the stsadm -o deploysolution file_name.WSP command.
