XVID is an extension characteristic for files containing digital video generated on the basis of the Xvid codec library. Such encoding of video materials complies with the MPEG-4 part 2 encoding standard. Unlike the DivX codec, Xvid is a tool distributed under the GNU General Public License model.
XVID files are supported by many video playback programs and by hardware players.
