S is a text file containing source code written in a programming language. Typically S file stores source code written in low-level programming language (assembly language).

Assembly language is a type of programming language which uses statements that correspond strongly with CPU instructions, so called ‘mnemonics’. S files can be viewed and edited using any text editor application.
