Files with the .APPX extension contain the Windows application suite for Windows 8 and above, designed for use in the Windows Store. Software contained in APPX files is packed by programmers developing system apps using software from the Visual Studio family – their maximum size is limited to 2GB.
An extended version of the file is the APPXUPLOAD format, which is different in that programmers can add functionality that allows them to receive feedback messages when the application fails to function.
APPX is a application package file format introduced with Microsoft Windows 8 system. APPX file can store various types of applications and Windows 8 (and later) software programs available on Windows Store.
APPX package format conforms to Open Packing Conventions (OPC) standard for storing data and application resources in structured ZIP archive. APPX files have a maximum 2GB file size.
APPX file is a complete software package for distributing and installing applications. Before APPX, distributing software could be a bit problematic as traditional software applications used non-logical installers, called creators, to structure and configure application’s components Such solution was highly impractical and problematic in the case of distribution software on various mobile platforms. APPX format doesn’t have that problem and is ideal for distributing apps for various systems, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones. APPX apps work on various devices without additional configuration steps.
Befor uploading APPX to Windows Store, the author should choose a name for their application, provide necessary details regarding sale policy, and describe offered features. Each APPX package undergoes compatibility and security testing before being relased on Windows Store.
If you cannot open the APPX file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports APPX among those that are installed on your device.
A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the APPX file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.
The inability to open and operate the APPX file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Microsoft AppX Application Package Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.
If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the APPX file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the APPX file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the APPX file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.APPX) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected APPX file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the APPX file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. APPX) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
