The extension .DJVU is associated mainly with the files of the type, DJVU or Deja vu as they are more commonly called. The .DJVU is a modern file format for storing digital data in a lossless compression format. Most often, it is used to store text data and scanned documents. Due to its modern structure, the .DJVU gives better compression ratio and can be used as an alternative to .pdf format for better space efficiency.
The DJVU file is also used for storing digital images and its special layered separation technique to store the data makes its an attractive option for many computer programs.
DJVU file extension is used by compressed image format DjVu developed by AT&T Labs. The format is used fpr storing scanned images (graphics, photos, texts, drawings). DjVu files can use either DJVU or DJV extension.
DJVU format was developed chiefly as a means of storing all kinds of scanned documents (mixed documents with text, images, drawings). The format is commonly used for storing scanned ebooks, journals, comicbooks, or even ancient texts. The format allows publishing high-quality scans on the internet.
Although DJVU format stores images in compressed form, the images themselves are high resolution. Compression algorithm used by DJVU allows reducing file size 5 to 10 times more than JPEG or GIF compression is capable of. DJVU format also better handles converting large amounts of text, and is an open format. DJVU is a solid alternative to PDF, and by many considered to be even superior to PDF.
DJVU’s many advantages are the result of technologies used, such as image layer separation of text and background, arithmetic coding, progressive loading, and lossy compression. Format’s file structure is based on Interchange File Format and is composed of several fragments ordered hierarchically. Compression algorithm used by DJVU splits documents into three image layers: a background image, a foreground image, and a mask image. Background and foreground images are compressed using wavelet-based algorithm IW44, and the mask by using JB2 algorithm.
If you cannot open the DJVU file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports DJVU among those that are installed on your device.
A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the DJVU file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.
The inability to open and operate the DJVU file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the DjVu Image Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.
If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the DJVU file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the DJVU file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the DJVU file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.
If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.DJVU) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected DJVU file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the DJVU file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. DJVU) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
