Files with the .PPTX extension contain presentation files saved in an open XML format, which means that the data is stored separately, as files in a ZIP pack, with their description contained in the XML file, also located in the pack. When the file is unpacked, one can find text files, images, formatting, animations, drawn objects, as well as information about the individual presentation slides. This is a very easy alternative to binary PPT files.
Files of this type are created by presentation-making software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and OpenOffice Impress, and used for creating business-oriented, academic, and sales presentations.
PPTX is the default file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and later for storing slideshow presentations. PPTX files cans store such data as formatted text, drawings, images, animations, audio and video data, effects, charts, etc.
PPTX format conforms to ECMA-376 standard for Office Open XML package. Any software program using XML architecture can access information stored in a PPTX. PPTX files are generated by compressing the folder that stores information using OPC standard compliant structure.
PPTX format is the successor to PPT format and offers some additional features. PPTX has the advantage over it predecessor that it makes using, managing and recovering file data much easier. PPT file stores all presentation data in a single binary file, whereas PPTX format, which is based on Open XML standard, splits the data into smaller groups of files and stores them in a ZIP archive. This solution allows for embedding audio and video files, images, macros, and other multimedia as separate files for added mobility and flexibility. PPTX files aren’t entirely based on XML format – some sections of the files are in binary. ZIP compression allows for smaller file sizes and easier file distribution. Modular structure of PPTX files offers addtional protection from data corruption, and the built-in privacy protection features make cleaning files metadata much simpler.
If you cannot open the PPTX file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports PPTX among those that are installed on your device.
A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the PPTX file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.
The inability to open and operate the PPTX file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Microsoft PowerPoint 2007/2010 Open XML Presentation Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.
If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the PPTX file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the PPTX file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the PPTX file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.PPTX) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected PPTX file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the PPTX file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. PPTX) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
