What is a SKM file?
SKM file format is used by SketchUp software to store texture data, including property files in XML format, JPG texture image and PNG thumbnail image file. SKM files are compressed in ZIP format and therefore to view archive contents one needs to unpack it using a zip-compatible software.
SketchUp software was created by Google and enables user to create computer graphics. SKM file stores 2D graphic images that can be applied to 3D models and structures. The appropriate function is accessed from Materials panel of the program. SKM file are supported by Windows and MacOS systems. The files are stored in applications installation subfolders (paths depend on system type in question).

From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the SKM file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Is there one way to open unknown files?
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. SKM) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
