The extension .TMP refers to temporary computer files. There are many different adoptions of the temporary file format. Each of these may differ from one software to the other.
The underlying structure and use of all these temporary files is the same. They are mostly used for storing the backup or cache information of some other file that is open and being modified. Sometimes, the internet browsers generate a lot of .TMP files. These are nothing but the cache files used to temporarily store the website data for faster webpage rendering. The temporary files are also used sometimes in the intermediate stage for some file conversion operations.
TMP file extension is used for temporary files created by various software applications. TMP files store temporary data generated during program’s operation. TMP files are usually markd as ‘hidden’.
TMP files usually are generated when given application cannot allocate memory necessary for it to execute task due to insufficent address space available on the system. This is true especially for memory-hungry programs such as video editing applications. TMP files are also used as backup files during new file generation process.
TMP file should be automatically removed after process that created it finished its tasks or has been closed. Well, in theory at least. Leftover TMP files can accumulate and may use considerable amount of disk space. Sometimes it is hard to determine whether removing given TMP files won’t cause any problems as some temporary files can hold information critical for processes or applications to run correctly.
If you cannot open the TMP file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports TMP among those that are installed on your device.
A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the TMP file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.
The inability to open and operate the TMP file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Temporary Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.
If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the TMP file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the TMP file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the TMP file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.TMP) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected TMP file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the TMP file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. TMP) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
