File with an .MOF extension contains text definitions of descriptions of data classes provided by supplier, compliant with the CIM model (Common Information Model). MOF files syntax is based on Microsoft Visual C++ programming language.

Standard Managed Object Format was developed by the Desktop Management Task Force team (DMTF). MOF files are used in the process of changing settings of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), and to transfer them between systems. Using Mofcomp.Exe tool they can be compiled to a WMI repository and added to a DLL library containing a frame of code holding data defined in the MOF file.
