The .STEP extension belongs to files of the type, STEP 3D models, which is a standard format for the exchange of product data. The format is also recognized by the ISO as a standard with the number ISO 10303. Informally refered to as STEP, the format is used widely for exchanging data that originates from CAD software for 3D product and modeling.

The first version of the STEP files had some encoding bugs, hence an enhanced version in the form of version 2 STEP files was invented which has lately become the standard format with many CAD software.
