Files with the WAX extension are most often associated with Windows Media Player. From a technical point of view, WAX are ordinary text files containing information about the physical location of a WMA file on a data carrier. Initializing such a file will make the program play it after finding a WMA file found in the reference.
The WAX abbreviations refer to WMA files on the Internet. Sometimes WAX files are used, for example, as the value of the "href" attribute in the <a> tag when creating HTML documents.
