Files with the .XML extension contain text data in the XML language, short for Extensible Markup Language. XML uses markers called tags for defining objects and their attributes. It can be treated as a text-based database. XML files are similar to HTML files – the tags used in XML are, however, custom, and are used for defining various types of objects and properties. They are a universal format for storing and transferring data between programs and on the Internet. Thanks to the fact that they are text documents, they can be created and edited even using a simple text editor.

XML and HTML use very similar formatting scheme, but XML is more rigorous when validating expressions and tags, for example, tags must be properly closed and are case-sensitive, whereas HTML is more lenient in this regard.

Data stored in XML files is machine- and human-readable. XML format is a simplified subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) standard. XML standard quickly gained popularity among web users and today is considered standard format in many applications; XML syntax is commonly used a base for other document formats.
