Files with the .RDP extension are normal text files that contain the configuration of the connection between the terminal and the server, and are used by the Microsoft Remote Desktop Services software, as well as by other, associated software. Among other things, the files contain information regarding the address parameters and the server ports, as well as the username and password, domain, screen size, image viewing mode, and options that were applied to the file.
Since the files are saved in text form, they can be edited and saved using a text editor of choice.

RDP file stores information necessary to create remote desktop connection, including username, server address, port number, domain name, remote desktop size, password, compression settings, and other crucial data.
RDP automatic update feature
RDP files are automatically updated when user saves modifications to settings and Remote Desktop Connection service configuration. During the update process various details, such as modification date and time, are also saved in file metadata.
Text format
RDP files store data in plain text format and therefore can be easily edited using any standard text editors.
