The TAR.GZ extension is used in files that store compressed archives. They are used on Unix-based kernel. This two-part file extension specifies the TAR compression program and the GZip compression format. The process of creating TAR.GZ files begins with merging the archived files into one collective file and then the file is compressed with the Gzip program. Files compressed in this way are referred to as tarballs.
In TAR.GZ archives you can compress individual files as well as groups of files and entire folders with subfolders and their entire content.
