BASH_PROFILE is an extension of files associated with the Unix and Mac OS X shell. It is a tool in the form of a text interface with a built-in command interpreter. BASH_PROFILE files are used to store bash shell configuration data. These are environment variables, paths to programs launched by the terminal or other user settings.
If the BASH_PROFILE file is modified, the changes to the shell settings will not be visible until the user logs out and logs back in.
