The .BUP extension refers to files of the type DVD IFO backup. These are the backup repositories that store the information stored on system IFO files on a Digital disk.
Mostly, these are created when there is some sort of problem with the usual IFO file located on a disk so that the disk information can be backed up. This helps in the cases when the corrupt ISO files are unreadble by the media players and thus the disk info is fetched from these backup BUP files. These files cannot be read or opened manually as the information is in an encrypted format.

BUP (short for backup) file is a backup copy of DVD IFO file. BUP files are designed for storing information about contents of DVD storage disks and are an alternative to IFO (VIDEO_TS.IFO) files.
Alternative to IFO files
DVD VIDEO_TS files store three types of files: IFO, BUP, and VOB or VRO. IFO file contains information about location of the actual video data, audio settings, chapter information, tracks, and subtitles. Similar information are also stored in BUP backup copy. In the event of problems with reading IFO file, for example, due to corrupted file, BUP file will be used in an attempt to recover the information. BUP file extension can be manually changed into IFO in order for the player to read from the file directly.
