File with a .CMD extension contains a list of DOS or Windows instructions stored in form of text. The instructions are run according to their arrangement within a file. It can be initialised with a command - application CMD.EXE.

CMD files are batch files, similarly like .BAT files, which can be run with the COMMAND.COM instruction. They can be opened and edited within a simple text editing program.
