SFS is an extension specific to files that are archives generated on the basis of the compressible SquashFS file system. It is only functional on Linux kernel-based operating systems. A distinctive feature of such archives is that they are read-only. In SquashFS, data compression is performed using gzip or LZMA algorithms.
The SquashFS system is very often used in Linux distributions in Live CD versions, eg Knoppix.
