WMA files store audio data and related file metadata. WMA format was developed by Microsoft as a direct competitor to the popular MP3 format. Developers aimed to create a small format that offered superior audio quality, but the algorithm initially used proved to be unreliable.
Microsoft added new features to its WMA format, such as multi-channel support and lossless compression, along with the release of Windows Media Player 9. Developer also added support for internet streaming.
