Files with the .CRT extension contain certificates of secure websites - available in the HTTPS protocol. Certificates are used to confirm the authenticity of the site, and are distributed by companies that create and authorize certificates, such as Verisign and Thawte.

Browsers automatically verify certificates. The user can obtain the information contained in the certificate by clicking on the lock icon next to the website address.
