File with .CRY extension stores level map data for game developed with CryENGINE game engine, including data such as terrain structure, buildings, textures, items, objects, mission objectives and spawn points. This type of file is used by Sandbox tool which is a part of engine development software kit.

CRY files can be used by users to create custom in-game missions. Crytek has developed five version of its CryENGINE. The engine itself supports both PC and game consoles – games such as Crysis, Entropia Universe or Far Cry are powered by Crytek’s engine. It offers support for DirectX 12 and Virtual Reality technologies.
