DOT is a file extension native to Microsoft Word word processor. DOT file stores template for documents. Such template defines available Word formatting elements for created documents.

Templates allow users to easily create documents that follow certain structure and as such are useful for standardizing documents circulating in company. Word offers many predefined templates, but users can create custom templates that suit their needs. Newer Microsoft Word versions use DOTX files instead of DOT files.
