DXE file format is used by AutoCAD’s template generator tool. DXE files store extracted information regarding drawn objects and their properties. The file holds also information on the output format of the stored data (for example, spreadsheet data format).

DXE files can be used as template for extracting data with the same properties from multiple files. DXE files can be edited and queried for information. DXE files replaced BLK files used in AutoCAD 2006 version and older.
