File with a .MID extension contains attributes of music data, enabling playing sounds – their order, volume, length and type, it may also contain elements of data needed of a device controller. It is a standard format for many programs utilised for creation and mixing or music devices storing or playing sound compliant with the Music Instrument Digital Interface software.

MID files usually contain the attributes of music data themselves instead of the music, thanks to which they can be played with different instruments, programs or tools which can interpret the data. They can be also used to change the instruments on the MIDI device or information on its configuration.

MID (short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a native format for MIDI audio files. MID files don’t store and actual audio data, but audio data attributes describing it, such as notation, pitch, tempo, volume, length, and type of data. MID files can also hold information about device controllers.

MID guide files

As MID files don’t store actual audio data, they can be seen as a ‘instruction’ files on how each note sould be genereated by audio device or media player. MID files can be used by various musical instruments given that the instrument is capable of reading MID data correctly. MID offers advantages such as succintness, ease of editing, and multi-instrument support.

MID file’s compact size

MID files are smaller in size than MP3 or WAV files as they don’t hold any audio data. MID files are thus ideal format for exchanging music information between apps or distributing it over the internet, especially over bandwith-limited connections.

Technical information

MID format has two versions: Type 0 and Type 1. Type 0 is used for single channel data, while Type 1 for multi-channel data. MID connection can carry up to 16 independent channels numbered 1 to 16.
