Files with the .MOBILECONFIG extension contain configuration data, such as password policies, access permissions, proxy and VPN connection configuration, as well as calendar or email settings, and are used by Apple devices. The files are often used for remote transfer of device configurations with the use of a digital signature for safety, which, for example, allows for the configuration of multiple company-owned devices at once.

Mobile configuration files can be created using the iPhone Configuration Utility software, available both for Mac OS and Windows machines. Opening the files is also possible using the Apple Configurator 2 program.
