File with a .MXD extension contains an arrangement of a map with its description and marked objects built into it. Data within the file are complex and organised into streams and storages.

The ESRI mapping software, for instance ArcMap, utilises the MXD format to store maps. Multiple storing may cause data dispersion and increase volume of the file, in such case it is advised to save it as a new document.
