NIST files are associated with Hidden Markov Model Toolkit (HTK), a software package and library for C language. HTK can be used for such processes as speech synthesis or DNA sequencing.

Files with NIST extension are used for storing 8, 16, 24, or 32-bit audio files (mono or stereo). NIST header consists of a 1024 byte text.
