PPTX is the default file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and later for storing slideshow presentations. PPTX files cans store such data as formatted text, drawings, images, animations, audio and video data, effects, charts, etc.

PPTX format conforms to ECMA-376 standard for Office Open XML package. Any software program using XML architecture can access information stored in a PPTX. PPTX files are generated by compressing the folder that stores information using OPC standard compliant structure.

Advantages of PPTX compared to PPT

PPTX format is the successor to PPT format and offers some additional features. PPTX has the advantage over it predecessor that it makes using, managing and recovering file data much easier. PPT file stores all presentation data in a single binary file, whereas PPTX format, which is based on Open XML standard, splits the data into smaller groups of files and stores them in a ZIP archive. This solution allows for embedding audio and video files, images, macros, and other multimedia as separate files for added mobility and flexibility. PPTX files aren’t entirely based on XML format – some sections of the files are in binary. ZIP compression allows for smaller file sizes and easier file distribution. Modular structure of PPTX files offers addtional protection from data corruption, and the built-in privacy protection features make cleaning files metadata much simpler.
