VMSD is the file extension associated with a system virtualization tool called Vmware Workstation. The state of virtual machines created with this tool is saved periodically to files called snapshots. These files allow you to return to this state if something happened to the virtual machine after that time. VMSD files are used to store metadata about snapshot files.

Files containing snapshots along with VMSD files cannot be treated as a full backup of a virtual machine.
