File with a .VPK extension contains data – contents of a computer game which may be a map, material, model, scene, motion system or game’s add-on – the so-called mod. There are also the master VPK files which are the main catalogues of a set of the so-called raw VPK data files, which store specific data directly.

VPK – Valve Pack files are utilised by some of the games based on the Source Engine, such as DOTA 2, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead or Portal 2. This format is the successor of the GFC. They can be opened with the vpk.exe instruction from the Program Files game’s directory. VPK files are stored as elements of a VPK package, where a master file is a package_name_dir.vpk file, and the constituent elements are name_package_0.vpk, name_package_1.vpk and so on.
