ALE is an older format file extension most commonly associated with Avid Log Exchange. The data in the ALE file is for the footage and is saved in such a way that it can be exchanged between Avid tools. Technically speaking, ALE is a plain text file containing all the information about a multimedia project.

Currently, the ALE format and the Avid Media Composer software are rare and considered obsolete.
