ANS files extension is used for ANSI-based text files. ANS files store text graphics, which uses characters to display images in documents.
ANS were used for creating computer art when Bulletin Board System (BBS) was popular among MS-DOS users. This expression form was called ANSI art and it allowed users to create sequences of 8-bit and 16-bit color characters. ANSI was also used for creating simple animations (ANSImations). ANSI art is similar to ASCII art, but it is constructed from larger set of characters and therefore it is referred to as extended ASCII.
