Files with the DOTM extension are used by the popular Microsoft Word text editor. These are files that are used to store templates. On the basis of such files, proper program documents with the DOCX extension are created. The older version of the templates were DOT files, but DOTM files can additionally support macros and are generated based on the OpenXML data format. DOTM files use ZIP compression to reduce their size.
Microsoft Word is a component of the Microsoft Office software suite. The DOTM format has been used by the application since the 2007 version.
