File with a .FMW extension contains a project with management settings for spatial data in a visual form, both for input data sets, properties of their translations and output data. Projects enable read of data from many formats of relational databases, text files or other types of files.

FMW files can be used by FME Workbench, which is a part of the FME Desktop suite. The software is used to transform spatial data. Due to its support for a wide range of types of input data, it is called ETL – Extract, Translate, Load for spatial data.
