RST files store code written in reStructuredText markup language similar to HTML. The syntax of reStructuredText is simple and uses basic document and formatiing structure markers. The langugage allow users to swiftly created websites and various documents.

RST files are used by document generating software tool Sphinx, which supports HTML, PDF, ePUB, MAN, and other document formats. Sphinx was developed as a tool for creating Python documentations.
