WRI is an older file format supported on legacy Windows systems, including Windows 3.11. Upon the release of the milestone Windows 95, support for WRI format was dropped and the RTF format took its place.
WRI files store simple text documents with basic formatting. WRI files were associated with Windows Write, a very crude text editor. Write was later replaced by Microsoft WordPad, which is included with all subsequent operating systems developed by Microsoft. WordPad doesn’t officially support WRI files.
