XMS file extension was used by some MS-DOS files. MS-DOS is a text-based, command line operating system developed by Microsoft.
XMS files are related to expanded memory technology (access to more than 1 MB of memory) employed in MS-DOS and various conventional memory(first 640 KB of memory space) optimization procedures for running programs in real-time (supported in x86 family of CPUs) and HMA memory access. For technological reasons, the solution is no longer used and considered obsolete.
