BDF format was developed by Adobe. BDF file contains font data in graphical format. BDF standard is no longer developed, and the newset version, BDF 2.2, was introduced in 2013. Full documentation for BDF is still available on Adobe website.
BDF biggest competitors are the more efficent PCF document and the popular scalabale fonts TrueType and OpenType. Glyph Bitmap Distribution Format supports ASCII text, and versions 2.2 and later also offer support for non-western fonts.
